Corporate responsibility
We are very proud that, in 2011 Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands has granted Duyvis Wiener the designation ‘Royal’. Through its shareholder the P.M. Duyvis foundation, Royal Duyvis Wiener is involved in society, contributes and allocates its personnel and resources back to the community.
With a long term outlook on and responsibility for the global environment, the R&D team at Royal Duyvis Wiener constantly seeks to develop processing equipment which uses minimal energy, yet offers maximum durability and optimal quality.
The history of Royal Duyvis Wiener B.V.
The beginning in 1885
The history of Royal Duyvis Wiener B.V. starts in 1885 with Pieter Mattheus Duyvis (1857 – 1935), the fourth son in a manufacturers dynasty from the Zaan region. Pieter “P.M.” Duyvis studied Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University in Delft and together with his fellow student Mr. D.W. Stork, he founded on the 1st of November 1885, the machine factory “Twente”. Among other items, cranes, lifts and bridges were built.
The transition from the wind – to the steam era, ensured enough work, as a lot of factories and boats switched to steam and needed often maintenance. In the factory, the machines were driven by steam engines through a central drive shaft and drive belts.
Hem bridge
The first expansion took place in 1904, when simultaneously a technical – and administration office were realized. A big order came in: the production of the gear of the second Hemspoor bridge over the North Sea canal in Zaandam.
In 1909, due to a multiple number of orders, a new factory hall was built. In 1911, partner Eng. P.M. Duyvis Sr. was appointed director of the enterprise and Mr. Eng. W. Meyling was appointed as co-director. He came from the Stork – Meyling & Co. company in Hengelo. He got the assignment to develop and start the lift department. Probably this was the first lift factory in the Netherlands. About this time, Mr. D. W. Stork has left the company.
During World War I, Belgian soldiers and civilians (refugees) were sheltered at P.M. Duyvis, because Belgium was in war. In order not to participate in the war, they came to the Netherlands where they were under surveillance. During a period of 3 years, 30 Belgian refugees worked in the factory. Despite the difficult times in the twenties and thirties, the company kept growing:
– In the drawing office, female technicians were hired;
– In 1929, P.M. Duyvis Sr. left the company and his son P.M. Duyvis Jr. succeeded him as director;
Widening of the quay
In 1930, it was decided to close a part of the Zaan river in order to make a wider quay. On this new quay, the “Crooked Crane/Kromme Kraantje” was installed and until today, this little crane is significant for the factory and the Zaan region.
In 1957, yet another reconstruction took place and a new office, engineering room and canteen were built. The production area was modernized and expanded with new machines. The successful company celebrated her 75th anniversary at the Krasnapolsky hotel in Amsterdam.
In 1967, Mr. P.M. Duyvis Jr. retired. In this period, the enterprise received the first cocoa-related orders: the revision of cocoa butter presses. With these orders, a lot of knowledge was gathered and in 1975 they decided to develop a cocoa butter press. With some government subsidy, this development succeeded and the first Duyvis cocoa butter press was born. This press was installed at Gerkens in Wormer.
In 1996, a fire destroyed the drawing department, the office, the canteen and a part of the production area. Within a few days, 75 porta cabins were placed in order to continue the production. Because of the help by surrounding companies, the orders could be produced, delivered and installed on site in time.
Due to the fire, a new office was built and the factory got a complete make-over. The new factory hall was built over the old one, where after the old hall was demolished from the inside. During this period, the lift department was sold to Otis.
B.V. Machinefabriek P.M. Duyvis – Duyvis Wiener B.V.
In 2004, machine supplier Wiener (founded in 1889 in Haarlem) was taken over, including a number of their employees. By taking over Wiener B.V., the company could, besides the cocoa processing industry, also focus on the chocolate processing industry. Together, these companies supplied machines for the grinding, pressing and pulverizing of cocoa. During a fair in 2009, the “all-in-one” chocolate machine was revealed. In March 2009, B.V. Machinefabriek P.M. Duyvis became Duyvis Wiener B.V.
F.B. Lehmann GmbH
In November 2010, Duyvis Wiener B.V. celebrated her 125th anniversary. On September 8th 2010, the take-over of machine manufacturer F.B. Lehmann GmbH from Aalen, Germany (founded in 1834 in Dresden) took place. This company made products which were supplementary to the portfolio of Duyvis Wiener B.V.
Duyvis Wiener B.V. could now supply machines from bean to bar.
Royal
On Wednesday the 6th of April 2011, during a special celebration with guests from all over the world, Duyvis Wiener was granted the designation “Royal”. As stated by the Queen’s commissioner: “Nowadays your company is globally known as the innovative-, technical- and service driven partner in optimizing production processes. A global market leader in the field of cocoa butter presses and cocoa – and chocolate grinding equipment. It is with great honor to announce you that ‘Her Majesty’ granted your demand to use the designation ‘Royal’. The new company name became Royal Duyvis Wiener B.V.
Log5
In 2012, Royal Duyvis Wiener B.V. takes over Log5 Corp. By this takeover and the successful implementation of the developed pasteurization technique, a whole new market is open for business. Our technological knowledge can be applied in a broad spectrum of natural pasteurization, sterilization, roasting and pressing of nuts and seeds.
Thouet GmbH
After the take-over of Wiener B.V. and F.B. Lehmann GmbH, the company Thouet GmbH from Aachen, Germany is added to the group in 2013 (founded in 1947 as Thouet GmbH & Co KG in Aachen). This company is an experienced machine manufacturer, well known for its portfolio in the chocolate – and cocoa industry. Conches, melters, mixers, kneaders, pumps and pulverizing equipment belong to their core business.
JAF Inox
In 2014, the Brazilian company JAF Inox (founded in 2008 and original the Sartori & Pedroso Food Company) becomes part of Royal Duyvis Wiener B.V. This company is a family owned business and producer of gastronomic chocolate, unique at the Brazilian market. JAF Inox delivers turn-key chocolate production lines from bean to bar. Besides the chocolatiers and chocolate producers in the USA and Europe, the company aims also on cocoa farmers and plantations who want to process their cocoabeans themselves.
Thouet Lehmann GmbH
In 2016 F.B. Lehmann and Thouet merged to on one company. The company name became Thouet Lehmann GmbH with their office in Aachen, Germany.
Technology Center
In January 2016, during the 130th anniversary of Royal Duyvis Wiener B.V., the new Technology Center was opened. The 2000 m² Technology Center for Research & Development purposes, is unique in the world: research and product development, as well as performing customer trials and analyzing new products. Trials can be performed for cocoa-, chocolate and nuts, as well as recipe development. Last but not least: analytic comparison can be made between the different production methods available on the market.
Currently, Royal Duyvis Wiener B.V. is a company which core business is selling, developing, producing and maintaining equipment, as well as turn-key solutions for the global cocoa- and chocolate industry. With the technological knowledge, high quality products and innovative solutions, the company optimizes customers production processes. With the head office in Koog aan de Zaan, the company is located in the heart of the cocoa region. Because of the merge of different companies, Royal Duyvis Wiener B.V. is capable to deliver the entire production process from bean to bar.
Foundation Ir. P.M. Duyvis
Mr. P.M. Duyvis Jr. and Mrs. J. Duyvis-Veen didn’t have any children. Both were leading the company with a huge dedication and were involved in the well-being of their employees. During hard times, they supplied food, fuel and housing. Mrs. Duyvis was well informed about the daily struggle of the employees and always informed about their personal lives. Besides that, the couple was warm hearted for the Zaan region, the helped out with regional projects in the field of nature and culture. In 1995, after her husband’s death, Mrs. J. Duyvis-Veen raised the P.M. Duyvis foundation, in order to safeguard the continuity of the company in the future. The revenues of the foundation should be used for charity in the region. Until today, this is still the case.
